During the initial impositions of martial law, several dozen people were killed. The amount of social opposition was impressive. Those who avoided arrest started to reconstruct ‘Solidarity’ in the underground. The trade union was made illegal and most of its leaders were interned. Introduction of Martial Law was a general strike for “Solidarity”. It was clear that the new regime wanted to mercilessly crack down on the opposition. Similarly, the mass media, public transportation and educational institutions were placed under strict control. Another restriction of freedom was an imposition of curfew. Telephone lines were controlled, airports closed and mail regulated by censorship. Moreover, the streets were filled with tanks and armed soldiers. Multiple organisations and pro-democratic movements, including ‘Solidarity’, became illegal overnight. For those who were already abroad, closed borders meant that coming back to the country was not possible at all. Those who were not – were intimidated, forced to stop their activity or emigrate. Thus started severe repressions – many people were arrested and imprisoned. For the Poles however, it meant putting an end to the hopes for political and civic freedoms. Jaruzelski declared that his intention was to maintain “legal balance of the country, to create guarantees that give a chance to restore order and discipline” and “save the country from collapse”. Each day delivers new blows to the waning economy. State structures are ceasing to function. The achievements of many generations and the Polish home that has been built up from the dust are about to turn into ruins. I address you concerning extraordinarily important questions. Today I address myself to you as a soldier and as the head of the Polish government. Appearing on television, in the only available channel, Jaruzelski said: On Sunday morning, 13 December 1981, millions of Poles awoke to find that the entire country was placed under a state of martial law. His decision was an act of self-defence, necessary to keep the hold on the country. General Jaruzelski - Prime Minister and the First Secretary of The Party - believed that without Martial Law, the military intervention was inevitable. Plans for reconsolidation of power were prepared in secret. On the other hand, there was pressure of dissatisfied Kremlin and its threats of supposed armed intervention. Poland’s economy had practically collapsed. The Party itself was divided by factional struggles and confusion in the leadership. It could not cope with the expansion and pressure of ‘Solidarity’ movement, its growing popularity and demands to extract reforms from the government. In 1980-1981 the Communist Party of Poland suffered from a substantial crisis. An authoritarian government, led by General Wojciech Jaruzelski and the Military Council of National Salvation (WRON), introduced severe political oppression in an attempt to crush political opposition. 13 December marks the anniversary of introduction of Martial Law in Poland. "One Way or Another (Teenage Kicks)," recorded for Red Nose Day 2013 But four years later, closer inspection forces us to ask: What do they mean by "stand up"? There's a "stand off" and there's a "stick up," but we're not quite sure what a "stand up" is…Īs you'd expect from the title, this is baby Direction at their neediest and brattiest. "Stand Up," Up All Night ( bonus track)Īh, the jam - circa 2011, of course. And why, pray tell, are they walking around with one shoe?Ĩ4. Starting off sounding almost exactly like their (only slightly more superior) "More Than This," this might be the sappiest of all their ballads. "Half a Heart," Midnight Memories ( bonus track) So it's for the best that they kept this track off the standard release, since it's the only one that sounds like a boy band playing pretend.Ĩ6. Midnight Memories proved that 1D could do rock, and do it well. "Alive," Midnight Memories ( bonus track) "We're like na na na / then we're like yeah yeah yeah." Enough said.Ĩ7. Unfortunately, you'd be better off listening to Chris Martin and co. Surely you know that Harry is a renowned fan of Coldplay, the obvious sonic inspiration for this ballad. "Another World," Up All Night (bonus track)īet you didn't even know this song existed, did you?Ĩ9. “We were just young lads bouncing around, having a great time. “When it was happening, it was like we were in our own little bubble and everyone else was outside it,” Niall told Apple Music in 2019. (It should be noted that they usually wrote or co-wrote their own songs, a break with the conveyor-belt image of boy bands that made them that much easier to root for.) Zayn Malik left the group between 2014’s Four and 2015’s Made in the A.M., after which the rest of the lineup announced their own hiatuses, turning in a final performance on New Year’s Eve 2016. Take Me Home came out a year later to the month.īy 2013’s Midnight Memories, the group had grown more confident, reconciling teen sheen with arena rock and Fleetwood Mac-style pop-a sound that bridged the moment with something more timeless. By the time they released their debut, 2011’s Up All Night, they were already famous, filling a space in the pop landscape that had been all but empty since the breakup of *NSYNC a decade earlier. But what they lacked in polish they made up for in camaraderie, presenting less as a well-oiled machine than five guys who could jell without sacrificing their individual personalities. The London group-Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson-formed in 2010 as a bunch of also-rans on The X Factor, coming in third to no special fanfare. After all, was there any love more intense or committed than that of a teenage girl? Reflecting on their success during the group’s hiatus, Harry would wonder why it was that the tastes of teenage girls weren’t taken as seriously as, say, those of middle-aged men. But more, they made a point of taking those mostly female, mostly teenage fans seriously, bringing a sense of allyship to pop stardom that felt both refreshing and necessary. They knew how to write toward their mostly female, mostly teenage fans, of course. (An orange!) So, yes, a big show-but also five kids who won life’s lottery and were just as much along for the ride as everyone else. The goofy videos, the way they cracked up in their interviews, the way you could see Harry sitting behind Rihanna at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards and casually peeling an orange. No matter how crazy things got around them-95,000 fans packed into a South African soccer stadium, the Directioner who forced his way into Liam’s hotel room to steal his boxers and wear them around for a day, the shrine to where Harry got sick on the side of the LA freeway-the boys retained an air of approachability that made them seem a little different. He eventually came back to the stage, but not before setting a precedent: One Direction might be a boy band, one of the biggest in pop history, but that didn’t mean they were gonna dance. In a formative moment in 1D history, Zayn Malik ducked out of the dance segment on The X Factor, because dancing just made him feel weird. To end up with a video from your presentation, start by building your document as you normally would. I’m not sure why it’s not more well-known, as the option is right there in the Export menu. One of Keynote’s best-yet often overlooked features-is its ability to export your creative masterpiece to a video file. I use Keynote to craft social media graphics, bring animated holiday cards to life, and even create lower thirds and animations for use in my videos and tutorials. The club-inspired record was originally previewed during Frank’s PrEP+ party on Halloween in NYC (Oct. Plus, crowdfunding platforms generally take a cut of the money you raise. And repaying funders with "rewards" might be a lighter lift than repaying a loan or taking on investors.Ĭons: Unless your campaign goes viral, you might have difficulty raising as much money as you need this way. Pros: Launching a crowdfunding campaign can be easier to set up than many other funding options. Depending on the crowdfunding platform you use, the funds you receive might be in exchange for some kind of reward (like a "thank you" on your website or a sneak peek of your product), might be structured as a loan (in the case of peer-to-peer lending), or might even be equity investments in your company. You can then receive funds from friends and family-but also strangers-who come across your crowdfunding campaign online. How it works: You write up a description of your business, your funding goals, and what you plan to use the money for, and post it on a crowdfunding platform (see a list of some of the major platforms). While it may feel like an awkward step, think of it as an expression of your mutual respect: your respect for their financial resources, and their respect for the legitimacy of your business. Key tip: Even if you don't work with an attorney, write up a formal agreement that spells out all parties' rights and obligations, and have it notarized. And if the business fails, you might disagree over what sort of repayment they're owed. If your business makes it big, your friends and family might regret not receiving equity (or you might regret that you gave it to them). Pros: With (typically) no lengthy applications or credit checks involved, this can be a simple and quick way of raising funds.Ĭons: Even if all parties go into the arrangement with best intentions, it's possible that feelings could change down the road. If so, you'll need to agree on whether the money is really a gift, a loan, or an equity investment in your business, plus agree on terms and draw up paperwork. How it works: Perhaps your best friend from college (or the “bank of mom and dad") believes in your idea and wants to give you a boost. Key tip: If you're considering this route, look into whether you might qualify for one of the SBA's loan programs and apply with SBA lenders before you consider a non-SBA-guaranteed loan. They may also want to evaluate your personal finances, in addition to your business finances. Prospective lenders may scrutinize your business plan and your company's financial statements, and may want to see that your company has already established a credit history. Plus, taking out a loan-rather than taking on equity investors-means you get to own more of your business's potential success.Ĭons: These loans can be difficult to obtain, and borrowers typically must pass a rigorous application process. Pros: Loans backed by the US Small Business Administration (aka "SBA loans") can come with highly competitive interest rates. (Or if you borrow with a small business line of credit, you'll instead have access to a revolving line of credit, similar to a credit card.) If your application is approved, you typically receive a lump sum of money that you'll have to repay, with interest, according to a certain time frame. How it works: You apply to borrow money from a lender, like a bank. Levin has headed the technical support department since 2004 and has been with Final Draft since 1999.
